“Offended” By Us Celebrating Christmas

Let me start off by saying: my family is Muslim, but I am not. My parents immigrated here over 40 years ago, and never used welfare or ANY government assistance, always pay their taxes, and still work. We love this country and its people, and we are proud Canadians! So dont bother with the “go back to your country” crap.

We were in line waiting for our turn for pictures with Santa, when a man behind us said “why are you here? Let us go before you.” I turned and said “excuse me? Are you talking to us?” He said “yeah, who else would I be talking to? You’re Muslim. You dont celebrate Christmas” and pointed at my mother’s hijab (head scarf that covers only the hair and neck). I replied telling him we do celebrate, and it’s not his business.

ANOTHER GREAT POST:  Rant - Being a Cashier Isn't Easy

He stayed quiet for maybe 2 minutes, before saying “I’m offended. Celebrate your own religious shit and stop trying to take over everything. Stupid immigrants” I couldn’t believe my ears. Seriously?? There are many Muslims, and people from many different religions who celebrate Christmas. How is this “offensive” to anyone? Even some people who are agnostic or atheist celebrate it. Get real.

My family loves Canadian holidays; we celebrate them all. They do not try to “change” or complain about any traditions or customs. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

PS. Everyone has ancestors or parents and such that immigrated here. So before you call someone an immigrant, you might want to look at your background. We are just as CANADIAN as you are.

I can’t believe that anyone could behave that way. I’m disgusted. I’ve been called a racist merely because I have white skin. It sucks. Pay no attention to that kind of ignorance. Btw…it is of zero relevance who was here first. We all just want to live peacefully. Period.

      [0]
    • It’s sad that we have to be reminded of that.

      [0]
    • I was born in canada. I did not immigrate here. As did many non native Canadians. They are NOT immigrants……

      [0]
    • I would just like to point out that the Native people immigrated here as well from Asia/Siberia. They were just here first but they were not originally here when the earth was created, they came from somewhere else just as we all have.

      [0]
    • Esther Maludzinski that has been disproven, keep up with the research, besides I am merely pointing out a True Fact

      [0]
    • Disproven how? I recall seeing that there is likely to have been a few different paths into the Americas, but regardless, humanity CAME here, it didn’t evolve here.

      [0]
    • Please do post the link that shows the True Fact that there were people here when the earth was created. Here’s some info for you. It has not been disproven. http://firstpeoplesofcanada.com/fp_groups/fp_groups_origins.html

    • Esther Maludzinski

Scientists know that First Nations people have lived in what is now Canada for at least 12,000 years, because they have found bones and artifacts that go back that far. Many scientists now believe that some of the First Peoples may have been here for much longer than that.

    • Sherry they have been here that long yes , but they migrated from Asia. I agree with Trish, who cares we should all just live peacefully.

      [0]
    • 12,000 years is nothing in a world which is millions of years old. People have been around a long long time.

      [0]
    • People are people we’re all the same under our skin. Now everyone have a Merry Christmas and let there be some semblance of peace . It would be lovely if it was peace on earth but lets be real here. How about we just start with our very own little part of this planet and make it a better place.

    • Kimi Gascon Kimi Gascon says:

Actually they aren’t. Natives were actually NOT the FIRST people here, though it is still a new theory and not much research has been done to prove or debunk yet. I beleive there’s a few theories with strong evidence supporting this. Just like how there’s some evidence the Norse arrived before Columbus. Either way the point is don’t be an ass hole to others. You have citizenship you are Canadian. Celebrate whatever the Hell you want just don’t go out of your way to cause harm.

      [0]
    • Agree wholeheartedly!! No one is special, we are all the same…human.

      [0]
    • Ya minus they were just here first not evolved here. They migrated all the same. And ya they found human remains from 1200 years ago but I dont recall them having any evidence to suggest it was first nations or another people who just travelled here first. Natives just kinda assumed it was them as I have yet to see a formal study deeming it any specific people

      [0]
    • really? people are arguing over where the indigenous people of the americas came from? Its christmas and a time of celebrating with fellow beings no matter what your skin color is. It really bugs me when people have to debate where indigenous people came from instead of just asking the indigenous people. They have always known where their people came from and its only now science is backing up what they have always known.

  51. Some people couldn’t find the location of their asshole with two hands and a flashlight. I’ve been dealing with ignorant comments my whole life. It’s so frustrating that people could be so dumb and ignorant. I grew up in a mixed /multi religious household and learned that it’s important to respect and celebrate all of “Gods” holidays if you believe and to respect those who don’t follow any religion. Leave people alone, mind your own business and wait your turn in line!!!! Someone failed kindergarten basics 101.

    [0]
  52. I am sorry you were treated that way. However, I just want to point out that Christmas is not a “Canadian holiday. ” It is actually a religious holiday, which does have commercialized components.
Partake as you wish, but please remember this holiday is special/ sacred to many people, mostly of Christian faith.
Yet, there was no right for you or your family to be spoken to so rudely.

    [0]
    • Kristle Gage Kristle Gage says:

It is not a religious holiday for those who are not religious.

      [0]
    • Kristle Gage
Right, so partake in the commercialized ” part” of the season. But Christmas is about the birth of Jesus and its roots are religious based.
I am sure I explained that in my previous comment

      [0]
    • Actually if your really look back in the history of Christmas and how it is celebrated by many, it’s not religious or commercialized and didn’t have anything to do with the birth of Christ. Christmas trees, lights, gift giving etc were totally separate from any religion whatsoever. And, for the record, I did grow up going to church.

      [0]
    • Mallory Gage Mallory Gage says:

You mean like SANTA???? Frankly, most of the Christmas traditions in Canada are the “commercialized components”. Almost none of them have roots in Christianity at all. This was originally a pagan holiday, or an amalgamation of many pagan holidays over the winter months. That’s where Yule logs, Christmas trees, exchanging of gifts, mistletoe and large feasts comes from. In fact up until the early 1900s these Christmas traditions and celebrating Christmas at all was illegal in much of North America because these practices were considered devil worship.
My point is that Christmas is not reserved for the Christian faith. It’s for anyone who wants to celebrate it. Period.

      [0]
    • You might be interested to know that Muslims also believe in Jesus and Moses and Abraham, and Noah, Adam and Eve and all other prophets …

      [0]
    • Actuslly it may be seen as a Christian holiday however, it was actually yule to celebrate the solstice, which the Christians of the time took over and claimed as their own in their bid to stamp out all beliefs that were not Christian. In fact many of the symbols we recognize as being related to christmad come from yule. Such as evergreen wreaths and trees, the colors red and green, bells, candles, holly, elves, mistletoe, ligjts used to decorate with (though it was candles back then), and of course the yule log. So while we celebrate the birth of Christ dec 25(although most scholars say that was not the day of his birth, most likely he was born in the spring time), Christmas is not exclusive to Christians. Anyone can celebrate it and not just the “commercialized” version of it.

      [0]
    • Vicky Skowronski-Moser I don’t recall Santa being mentioned in the bible.

      [0]
    • It’s actually a pagan holiday.

      [0]
    • Mallory Gage when the fuck was Xmas outlawed as devil worship you simple fucker

      [0]
    • Lisa Jonk Lisa Jonk says:

The gentleman stated that he and his family love the Canadian traditions in Canada. Santa Claus is North American it has nothing to do with the religious holiday and even if it did no one is allowed to bully or insult others. The racist in line is an idiot. Santa Claus has nothing to do with Christ’s birth. Please be a good Christian and remove your comment excusing this persons atrocious behaviour

      [0]
    • Vicky Skowronski-Moser you need to read up on Saturnalia.

      [0]
    • Lindsay Gibbons gift giving at Xmas is relatively recent (1900s) due to old sears catalogs

      [0]
    • Christmas’ origins are pagan. It was morphed into a religious holiday to encourage people to convert at the beginnings of the Christmas faith.

      [0]

I am sorry you have to be subjected to the stupidity of others. You are right, unless your native, you are an immigrant. What makes me laugh even more is that these same people probably have parents that have families who immigrated from mutiple countries. I for one am, Irish on my father’s and Scottish/English on my mother’s side. I may have been born here but my bloodlines were not!
It’s time people wake up and get rid of this illusion our media paints for us. Put ANY person in a room for a 1 on 1 conversation with no cameras and no outside influence what they want out of life and I can promise you the same answer. “A better life for our children!”

Such ignorance! Thanks for posting this. I have some friends who are from India and came here many years ago. They told me their parents got Christmas trees and celebrated Christmas at home in India while they were growing up! I bet this rude person commenting would not know such a thing either.
    Thanks for posting this!

  105. It sounds like you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. I see too many memes and posts saying if you emigrate here, you better take on our customs, and yet you’re told to keep to your own traditions instead of taking on new ones. How is anyone supposed to know what to do? Too many people classifying others as ‘Them’and ‘Us’, when in the end, we’re all human.

  112. Aww that’s sad. Behaving like that in front of kids, what are they teaching them?

  113. Somebody actually said that to you? Unbelievable. I’d like to think that those types of bigots are the minority. Hopefully you don’t have to suffer through any more of that, and just know that there are tons of people who accept all cultures and nationalities, because we all originate from somewhere else 🙂 Merry Christmas!

  117. I think what happened to you was really unfortunate. My family celebrates Christmas BECAUSE we live in Canada. It is practically impossible not to do so. My father is Jewish and my mother was raised Christian, but neither are particularly religious. However, they put me in daycare (non-religious) when I was 3. I was told by people I trusted that if I was good, Santa would come, and if I was bad, he would not. On Christmas morning, I cried. Santa did not come to our non-religious household. It broke my parents’ hearts. They had no idea that I had been indoctrinated about Santa at daycare. Well, they quickly made up a story about how Santa was simply late and rushed off to get a few gifts. Every year since then, we celebrate Christmas. If your children are socialized in Canadian society, it is nearly child abuse not to do so. And if you don’t, but you explain to your kids that they aren’t bad, etc., that’s fine, but I think most parents just accept that there are secular elements to Christmas that are so permeated into the culture (such as Santa Claus) that they pretty much have to go along with it, regardless of their own religion. Christians who are not aware of this need to be educated. This is a sacred and holy Christian holiday, but it’s our holiday too! (And it was moved to December long ago with addition of lights and decorations because it was easier to convert the many who worshipped the solstice that way.)

  118. It was very wrong of that person to behave like that towards you . Christmas is for all of us ,I hope you can forget his words and have a great Christmas !!

  119. Sad to hear this crap still happens here. Happy to not see any racist comments in the post though. If I was there I would have told him that Christmas was not originally a “Christian” holiday. It was originally a pagan holiday. Santa originates from the God Odin in Norse mythology and his 8 legged horse Sleipnir. Odin led a hunting party in the sky and kids would fill their boots with hay and carrots for Sleipnir. Odin would leave teats and toys for the children in return. Sound familiar? Origins of Christmas can also be traced back to Roman times with a holiday called Saturnalia.

  121. I liked the P.S. the best. The only true Canadians are the ones that were here before all the immigrants came. My genes are from the first Canadians as well as the immigrants that came later.

And don’t forget , First Nations, Metis and Inuit were here first!!!! So basically if you don’t fall into those categories, you are an immigrant !!! How is this still not common knowledge. So annoying.
