For people visiting the Pembina River!!

Dear Pembina River Tourists,

For years our little town of 600-1000 people has been over crowded for the summer months. Yes it is definitely annoying that is locals can’t get anywhere near the river most days but what really makes us mad is the fact you come to our HOME and do not take care of it. Yes it is very scenic, yes tubing on the river can be enjoyable, however it’s totally unacceptable to litter EVERYWHERE!

I drive the river valley to work every single day and it makes me sick seeing beer cans, deflated tubes, food wrappers, diapers, among many other things littered, not only on the side of the road but on the beaches and IN the river as well. I can’t count on one hand how many times I or someone I know has been cut by broken bottles in the river. Not to mention the only people I ever seeing picking up left over garbage is the locals.

ANOTHER GREAT POST:  Concern

So seriously grow up and clean up after yourselves or don’t visit the river. That goes for all parks, if you can’t take care of them you shouldn’t be at them.

Sadly I too have witnessed this too many times in your community & elsewhere. I always pick up other peoples garbage / litter when I see it. Yes I am one of those out of towners, but love your community and am so grateful to share in the beauty of the parks & rivers within it.

I’m from Edmonton but we go to Pembina every summer and I agree fully …….. we always take our garbage with us and always end up picking up litter along the way because we love it there so much …….. breaks my heart too

The tubing company should be taking responsibility as well.

I grew up in Evansburg and Entwistle. The amount of traffic and litter is more than I have ever seen in that tiny town. I want to cry when I see people littering their shit everywhere. It used to be a beautiful town, help us protect that by doing your part. And since so many enjoy Pembina Tubing, protect that company as well by caring for the environment where it operates. Don’t let it get shut down because it brings new life to the town as well each summer. The blatant disrespect has to end though.

  6. This applies to tourists everywhere. I live down by the tourist area The Village at Pigeon Lake – one year somebody dumped a litter of kittens on our farm (all my cats are fixed). Mostly there are a lot of beer cans and drink cups being thrown from windows.

be nice if you could charge admission to out of towners and then use that money to hire students for the summer to clean up after them.

  8. I agree! I have only been a few times but I was shocked at how much garbage was left! Also, how many people get flipped over and all their stuff ends up at the bottom of the river (my umbrella, sunglasses and three sets of flip flops) probably not great for the aquatic life in the river! I wonder if writing to an MLA would do any good? And/Or perhaps start a program for the river floaters that provide bags and drop off spots for garbage? It is really unfortunate but not surprising at all. This is why our PLANET is the way it is as well. No one seems to give a fuck about anything anymore.

  9. You are 100% correct and people need to keep it pristine.

  10. Was just on the Cowichan River in BC. They have garbage and recycling bins anchored down in the middle of the river so you can get rid of your garbage as you float down. It is sad that people do not respect nature and the fun it lets us experience.

TRUE! Was there in the weekend and couldn’t believe the garbage… it’s not that hard to carry your crap until you find a garbage can. I saw people in kayaks collecting garbage, thank you for caring to whoever you are ❤️

  12. I’ve never been but have been begging my friends to make a day out of going… I’m sad to hear this. I’ve only heard good, fun things. I promise to make sure I clean up and recycle if I ever make it out!

The company renting the tubes should be giving everyone a bag for their cans and litter. Perhaps the companies should be held partly liable. A friend of mine did the trip a week ago.and was disgusted.

  14. A friend and i were talking about the disturbing amount of garbage left behind just the other day. I thought perhaps the tubbing company came and did a nightly clean up after it closed. Guess not but they are acting as a place of business so the staff should be cleaning. On the other side of that i agree, clean up your garbage people!

  15. We are here now and totally agree. Every year we float the river and can’t believe the amount of garbage and tubes in the bushes. Pick up after yourselves people!

  16. When I float down the Pembina I pick up as much random garbage as I can. And I encourage my friends to do the same. Every little bit helps!

BUT if everyone brought out what they took in, the world would be a better place.

Pembina is the one of the most enjoyable places I’ve ever been. I agree with the op and wish the same
We go there often but we make sure all is clean before leaving. Such a shame some people are disgusting

  18. Anyone’s policy should be leave it cleaner than you found it. When we went it was just after a long weekend and we grabbed other people’s garbage as we travelled. It extended our trip but man the stuff we found was disappointing.

Yes of course. There is nothing worse than littering in campsites and beautiful scenic places.

That is so sad so many people have no respect I see it every day where I live

  22. Also havin more info on ways to keep your stuff with you and not loose incase of being flipped over or whatever would be helpful. I had no idea my first time going…..

  23. I agree too. One of our favourite campsites years ago, until we could never get a site. Even then there had started to be too many who didn’t care one hoot about disturbing the other campers. Somewhere, at some time, these people didn’t get spanked enough.

  24. And put away your god damn shopping carts.

  25. It’s everywhere, the whole human race has turned into a bunch of slobs. I have to take a gum wrapper home or I feel guilty. We were taught this way by our parents.

    [0]
  26. I agree. We live out that way and stopped going because of the hooligans. It’s not fun anymore so we found a better spot for our own float

    [0]
  27. Well said. We too love to float down the river, and have taken in-tow a deflated raft or floating garbage. Those who litter don’t have seem to have the common sense to understand ITS WRONG. They probably also throw lit cigarettes out their windows, same mentality. It remains up to the rest of us to pick up after the lowlifes who don’t care. It’s sad but we can’t stop pickle no up or we will lose that river. Here’s hoping at least 1 person sees the light.

I 100% agree. We visited the park just the other night and it was discussing. Normally we would pick up garbage in places we visited also, but we did not have a bag on us as it was not a planned stop. The diaper on the beach was nasty. I’m sorry I will not pick up someone’s bodily fluid with my bare hands. Pick up after your own children people!! And you drinkers who decide drinking in public is a good idea..beer bottles where children play???!?! Seriously who raised you??

One of the biggest problems there is the alcohol cans and bottles.
You’re not supposed to drink on the river, but people do it anyways. I’ve seen multiple times where to police were waiting at the end to hand out tickets to people who had empty liquor bottles/cans.

Most people little because they don’t want the hefty fine.
I’d even pick up cans and bottles along the way if I wasn’t afraid of getting fined.

I never walk in lakes, rivers, creeks, etc.. Without water shoes with thick soles. Cut myself good on a bottle once, that was enough for me.

Then everyone willing and able , should meet up and tackle the problem!! We should make a group for this as well to start organizing – further we should start reporting these said people to authorities!! Please people add me , and lets get started –

Thanks for this shout out of concern!!!!! I agree. Leave it cleaner than how it was when you showed up, take out what you brought in. Simple.

  36. I am volunteering my time to come out to Pembina a couple times for sure and more if necessary. Will bring couple truckload of friends. I’d rather clean this up ourselves than get more officials out there. The magic of Pembina WAS the freedom. If we all pitch in. We can sort this.

i tubed there for 40 years but stopped going a few years back due to the masses ruining it. Locals don’t go anymore therefore it doesn’t get cleaned up anymore. This is what the greedy company did and what the local govt helped create without any thought of the consequences…Just cuz you can, doesn’t mean you should…If you build it, they will come”

I’m a local as well, and I rarely take my kids to the park anymore. No parking, loud drunk tubers which I’ve had to yell at a few times because of their behaviour around children. Ive recently talked with friends that live half hour down river in sangudo and they are finding the pembina River tubes, and other trash washing up on the shore down there. The problem is stretching alot farther then our little community!

  40. Totally agree! Come on people! Pick up after yourselves, impart values for your children & lead by example! It’s really quite simple……cleanup your garbage or stay home & litter your own space!

  41. I’ve never been, but I have read this year after year, it is really incredibly sad that people can be so filthy and lazy. It’s not hard to pick up after yourself.

  43. There has been many times when we have camped there and we picked up garbage by the beach & in the parking lot and by the bridge. We have also told ppl to get there garbage & take it with them. We camped many many times there in past several years. Its “our favorite spot”! We often thought that the place where they rent the tubes, they should get someone to come pick up all the garbage. We seen so many of there customers leave garbage around.
Hoping ppl will clean up after themselves!
