Thanks for Caring for Your Staff
Shout out to good retail employers who care about their staff!
I was in a grocery store yesterday and some women were complaining (to each other) that the cashier was sitting down. Boo on those nasty women. I bet they never worked a day in retail in their lives.
I have. I worked retail for 4 years, there were some days my back ached. Standing on a hard floor is very hard on the back and legs. There is no need to stand when the job can be easily done sitting.
I note that the cashier was friendly, and offered help as appropriately needed, but standing was clearly not a requirement of ringing things through the cash register. She did stand to help put things in the grocery cart.
Why do we think that a minimum wage employee needs to hurt their back and/or legs for us?
When I worked in a grocery store sometimes you had to lean on your cash register between customers because your back was so sore. It’s about time employers looked after their staff and provided chairs. I wish mine did.
Anyone who complains about a retail person sitting down while doing their job needs to try standing up their entire shift and not moving from the same spot and see how that goes for them.
