Venting – Speed Kills Your Pocketbook in Edmonton

I just recently moved back to Edmonton after living in Los Angeles for a few years. Speed limits are nearly double there than they are in Edmonton and there are less accidents in LA (which is impressive when you think about how many cars are on the roads).

Edmonton’s speed limits are just ridiculous! I feel like every road I drive on is just a cash grab for photo radar.

A speed limit should seem too fast for the majority of drivers or it is not a maximum limit!

ANOTHER GREAT POST:  Treated unfair at work/bullying?

A speed limit should be set so that the majority of motorists observe it voluntarily and enforcement can be directed to the minority of offenders!

I know this video is for BC, but this guy brings up some amazing points about speed limits and I think Edmonton should take notice of it too! Check it out!

They also don’t get winter down there. But good job trying to correlate similarities. Next time use science, instead of opinion.

Courtney, I’m gonna leave you some advice. Learn the definitions of the words you use, also, when someone is direct, or concise to their point, you thinking its condescending may just be a “you” issue. I responded to you much less condescending than you did to me, even in your first response. Then you ramp up with “cunt” and apologize to what you assume me having is a small penis. I find it odd that you think of my penis without having met me. Silly.

      [1]
    • Lol what’s with people going out of their way to be sarcastic dinks on here?

      [0]
    • Mike Hanna Mike Hanna says:

      My comment isn’t sarcastic. It’s factual. There’s a difference.

      [0]
    • Mike Hanna Mike Hanna says:

However, I’ll leave this sarcastically, even thought it’s a tone, not a font.

      [0]
    • What’s the definition of a cunt?

      [0]
    • Mike Hanna Mike Hanna says:

I’m sure you’re well acquainted with that.

    • Mike Hanna Mike Hanna says:

Yikes. You sure got me. Sorry this conversation didn’t go as you expected. It’s nice to see you jump on the insults and attempts to demean. Sadly you don’t affect me. Have a good day dear.

      [0]
    • Also, try not to flatter yourself so much. Who said I was referring to you and your post specifically? Nobody did.

      [0]
    • Mike Hanna Mike Hanna says:

Oddly you came into this adding nothing, and thundering all the while. Class act.

      [0]
    • Lol you were the one that start being condecending for no reason. I can be an annoying asshole too. Look at me!!!……. Move along please.

      [0]
    • In just sick of everybody being so fucking negative for no reason. I’m sorry that everybody has such a sorry life that they can’t be decent to one another. Clearly biting your tongue isn’t the way to do shit anymore.

      [0]
    • Mike Hanna Mike Hanna says:

Evidently. I wasn’t condescending, I merely fielded your question in like fashion. I see you’ve deleted a comment, that’s not annoying, that’s just sad. You are a little too concerned with my comment in relation to the original post, yet here you are being exactly what you accuse me of. The only one here bing negative is you. I suggested they try a different avenue to attain credibility next time. I suggest the same for you

      [0]
    • I’d like to think people have enough sense to adjust to weather conditions when need be.. So your argument is invalid. So we need to drive artificially slow all year round because there are going to be a dozen or so snowy days when roads are slippery?

      [0]
    • Mike Hanna Mike Hanna says:

That’s essentially the entire point aggie, people don’t adjust for weather concerns. Edmonton has the highest incidence rate in Alberta, with less registered vehicles than Calgary. That’s not a good thing. My argument is fully valid due to that one fact.

    • Donna Bryan Hallgren says:

Definitely a factor here, Mike. Glad you pointed it out.

When LA drivers move up to Oregon, they nearly kill everyone in the winter when there is the least bit hint of ice. I can’t tell you how many drivers with California plates nearly killed me on my bike when the streets were slippery in the 18 years I lived in Portland.

I change a letter due to autocorrect. As for harassment, pretty sure you chased my comment down.

Hey, aside being a Facebook warrior what kind of volunteer work have you done, you know, to help people?

I was a volunteer firefighter, I’ve donated blood 50 times, volunteered at the SPCA andSpecial Olympics as well as teaching self defence to battered women. I’ve also been a personal trainer for free to people who couldn’t make it to gyms due to health reasons. I’m sure your humanitarian causes are just like so crazy wow lol wtf kardashians bars make up boys.

    • LOL you brought up the small
Penis comment that I deleted. Is there something wrong with you? Is there really? Holy fuck dude just stop. your making yourself look bad now

      [0]
    • Mike Hanna Mike Hanna says:

I look bad because I wonder why you brought it up? Do you know what “logic” is?

      [0]
    • I’m asking you to stop now. I don’t care. If you care that much that you’re willing to sit here and write paragraphs to me, then I suggest you go and spend time with your family. Do something that will have some meaning at the end of the day. IM leaving now.

I’m actually being paid to be driven home on a motor coach. It’s a perk of the job. It’s starting to look like you need a functional life at this point. Aim high Courtney. Aim high in life.

    • I’m wondering why you’re bringing it up now after it was long deleted… Omg hahah BYe… Unlike some people apparently, I have better things to do then be a keyboard warrior all night long. Have a good evening my friend ☺️

Double? How can someone drive at 100kph in a residential area?

    [1]
  4. Too much entitlement and lack of brains behind the wheels here.

    [1]
  5. Speed limits are 220kph of the freeway? Where? I haven’t been able to get over 100 on LA’s freeway, ever…

    [1]
  6. That would be the right way to set the limits, but then the city wouldnt get as much money from all of us.

    [0]
  7. And Alberta has the worst drivers in the country……….. Won’t work,

  8. Jennye Blain Jennye Blain says:

Somebody doesn’t understand the reason for speed limits… scary who is allowed to drive, can’t wait for self-driving cars.

    [0]
  9. Say the speed limit was 150 Then we will have the scared fools doing 50km egotistical assholes with trucks doing 200km and people who follow the rules doing 150.. Not to mention the scared fools doing 50km don’t know the left lane is passing lane … Hahaha lets just say death total in Edmonton will go up 300 percent.

    [0]
    • Jennye Blain Jennye Blain says:

I’m one of the ‘scared fools’! When I have to drive in the city I’m terrified most of the time, it would be nice if people at least obeyed the basic rules when driving, but it’s all thousand pound missiles hurtling around maniacally! I’ve been driving for nearly 30 years, and never had an accident, but I can’t wait for a self-driving car! 😉

      [0]
  10. Seeing as how you have been away for a few years you might note what Micke Cockrall said – and incidentally Edmonton Drivers are the worst in Alberta.

    [0]
    • The drivers in Edmonton are too slow not too fast though. I’ve been cut off by more people trying to merge on Henday going 70 or 80 than speeders.

      [0]
    • Samara White Samara White says:

It’s because people buy their licenses. I live in millwoods. And on a daily basis see people that are on the road that shouldn’t be driving, because they cannot make a left hand turn or even a right hand turn on a red light. It’s pathetic.

  12. Sharon Swan Sharon Swan says:

seems to me does not matter what the speed is the speeders are still going to speed whether it is 50 60 or 80 km in town … and accidents will still occur no matter at what speed .. seems like if you are not watching every direction and every car around you … accident will happen

    [0]
    • Not true look at the Autobahn highway in Germany and see how many accidents occur on a Daily Basis.

      [0]
    • Sharon Swan Sharon Swan says:

oh I am just talking about Edmonton Alberta drivers .. no where else .. sorry should have stated that .. when we get our first snow there is usually 50 – 75 accidents first day ..

      [0]
    • Drivers here don’t have the mental capacity to be able to handle the speed limits in other countries. They’re too self absorbed and entitled and think that every road belongs to them, to drive however they please.

      [0]
  13. Lol there’s so much traffic congestion in LA I doubt you’re able to get 60 anywhere.

    [0]
  14. I totally agree with you! The limits are a joke, and the fact that people still drive under them is ridiculous, maybe if we upped the limits people would speed up a bit and stop holding up traffic everywhere.

    [0]
    • traffic is held up by driving heroes like yourself who just rear ended someone

      [0]
    • I have never rear ended anyone and I don’t speed. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect people to drive the speed limit. Just as you don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect people to not speed. (And I’m talking in ideal situations like mid day, summer) the only times I’ve been close to rear ending someone is when I’m cruising along Henday at 100km/hr (the speed limit!) and someone like you I’m assuming doesn’t speed up properly in the merge lane and cuts me off merging in at 70 or 80km/hr.

      [0]
    • Samara White Samara White says:

I feel like it has lots to do with that our registries are privately owned. And there are many people on the road who shouldn’t have their license because they just buy their license. One of my friends was buying a car when he had his learners and the finance guy even said to him hey if you need help getting your license my friend owns a registry. So think about what kinda business those two have with each other. There needs to be something done about it.

      [0]
    • Bryan Lat Bryan Lat says:

No they are not a joke. is there a reason why you need to get to the place in a hurry. maybe leave earlier. You might not like your safety, but I am sure OTHERS value theirs more.. Drivers attitude is a big part of driving and if you are always in a rush then you got a poor attitude.

      [0]
    • Bryan Lat Bryan Lat says:

Nikki, ya when people merge it is called sharing the road too, and you are to be slowing down, and allowing people to get in just like if you were/are.. that is why it is called merging..

      [0]
    • Bryan, you are correct that both parties share the road and I completely agree but neither party should be slowing down, that is where the problems come from. Please see this photo explaining to bring your vehicle to the posted speed limit when merging and not to slow down. That’s all I’m trying to say

      [0]
    • Nikki, I’m with you! I drive a lot all day every day and I am amazed at how many people don’t come even close to doing the speed limit. I am not a speeder but I sure as heck would like to at least do the speed limit.

      [0]
    • Annemarie Wisecracker Thank you! I wish there were more drivers like you out there 🙂 and I’m not unreasonable, I mean middle of winter, -40 and ice is a totally different story here. I’m just talking about ideal conditions.

      [0]
    • I agree! I’ll be the first one to slow down when the conditions are less than ideal and I will also be in the far right lane!! People need to learn that too. And don’t get me started that it’s not a law on XYZ type road…no it’s not but it is common sense and being a considerate driver!

      [0]
  15. Did ANYONE watch the video???? It’s so annoying when things like this are posted and you look forward to some healthy debating going on…..then u read the posts and realize it’s just a bunch of idiotic posts!!! For some who actual watched the video and enforces speed…..I totally get her point!!! I am use to Calgary. …u go to Edmonton and OMG the speeds are slow!!! There are many roads that should be increased if only people would speak up and know their rights….oh and know the law!!! And NO I’m not talking about residential areas and raising those to…what…someone said 100km…my God….where has common sense gone!!!

    [0]

  18. Rob Saumer Rob Saumer says:

Speed doesn’t kill. Idiots who drive while texting, or are too stupid to be behind the wheel kill. I know this from first hand experience. My life will never be the same thanks to someone who was ill equipped to be behind the wheel of a car. Knowledge and patience will get you to where you’re going every single time. People need to stop being such impatient jerk wads while driving. You are essentially operating a piece of machinery that is large enough to kill so use your brains and operate it properly.

    [0]
  19. I like driving in LA much better than driving here.

    [0]
  20. great video. The guy really seems to know the facts, and not the crap that we always hear from politicians and the news. Thanks for sharing.

    [0]
  21. i havent read all the bitching and name calling but I can say that driving in LA is WAYYYYYYY better! The freeways flow for the most part and you dont speed like crazy through residential neighborhood. They use U turns instead of left hand turns which at first I thought was INSANE…turns out it is a wonderful idea that probably saves alot of injuries! Plus the have WAY more people and its a much more pleasant drive. Now I am not saying 100km in residential neighborhoods but higher speeds in some areas isnt a bad thing. It amazes me that in California they can have 8 lanes of traffic going 120 with not much problems but the Henday cant go a day without an accident ugh! What is wrong with us here? LOL That being said when it rains traffic slows right down like a winter day here. I was recently in Winnipeg and was shocked at their high speeds…..70 in shopping areas but they also seem to have it figured out.

    [0]
    • Same with in Ontario. And Seattle. I watched a guy take 5 lanes in a single lane change at rush hour down in Seattle! We all had to pick our jaw up when he got the off ramp safely!

      [0]
    • Donna Bryan Hallgren says:

They have U-turns like that where I grew up in the Detroit area. They are sometimes referred to as “Michigan Lefts”. They are a great idea for high volume traffic and I wish they had them here.

      [0]
    • Mike Hanna Mike Hanna says:

Unfortunately they have the drivers who can do that. In Edmonton it would take a lot of driver reform and education to make that happen within a couple years. Tracy you make an excellent point. I wish Edmonton could handle that successfully as everyone would benefit.

      [0]
    • Donna Bryan Hallgren says:

Also, the road engineering is a lot better. Don’t discount that, either.

      [0]
    • Donna…how so? Examples? Curious.

      [0]
  22. Dawna Giese Dawna Giese says:

If people are allowed to any faster on some road ways in Edmonton there will be more accidents. Crazy drivers won’t even slow down to let you merge into a lane where there is construction speeding past you almost causing you to crash.

    [0]
    • Use your blinkers, if you’re merging its their right of way, not yours!

      [0]
    • The law of the road is not to slow down to let people merge! It is for the mergers to accelerate to the speed of traffic so they aren’t cutting people off!! That’s the whole point of the merge lane! To give you space to speed up!

      [0]
    • Dawna Giese Dawna Giese says:

Not if you have your blinker on and have run out of road it’s a good way to die and It happened to me the other night in the pouring rain. I was going the speed limit trying to get on but the jerks coming decided to let me run into construction cones instead of showing some courtesy and letting me merge. It’s funny to you wait till your the one in a major accident

      [0]
  23. Anonymous says:

Um, I’ve driven a lot in Los Angeles and the roads are waaaay better engineered there. They are designed to drive at faster speeds safely. I’m not seeing well-designed roads here.

  24. Dan Kaufman Dan Kaufman says:

“Speed limits are nearly double there than they are in Edmonton and there are less accidents in LA.” Citation needed.

    LA is lovely, isn’t it!?

    [0]
    • Donna Bryan Hallgren says:

LOL, Dan Kaufman, people in Edmonton loooove to drive too fast for conditions and the number of people injured or killed as a result is absolutely shocking. But people here don’t seem to care, at least not enough to change their culture to one that has a respect for human life.

      [0]
  25. OP… shut up already

  26. Dave Ranch Dave Ranch says:

Drivers in Edmonton suck have u not heard we had like 30 die on the henday cause they were speeding Edmonton rds are not meant to speed don’t like it pack ur junk move back to the states where’s there’s more killings and serial killers

    [0]
  27. Oh my god Amen! Thank you! I feel validated for feeling exactly the same!!!

    [0]
  28. I agree it’s likely a poor design issue in this city

    [0]
  29. Bryan Lat Bryan Lat says:

Hmm ya people also dont realiae the amount of people in L.A. is well basic ly what twice of Toronto and there is no winter there etc. Insurance is cheaper fuel so so of course people will drive slower. And the law are way more strict too

    [0]
  30. Tracy Silva Tracy Silva says:

I’m in LA on vacation as we speak!! It’s crazy how many people are texting and driving fast!! Are you sure there isn’t “a lot” of accidents because I’ve seen 3 already ??

    [0]
  31. One of the biggest issues I’ve noticed on edmonton roads is people not knowing how to merge, as well as not knowing what a yield sign is

    [0]
  32. Yes, driven a road like Gateway/Calgary trail in LA and it was 50 mph speed limit… while Gateway is 36 …. and this road in LA had cars pulling in and out like CT and Gateway …… I have been passed by Priuses in LA doing over 80 — things are a joke here….. just because we get winter should not make us have to go too slow in the summer. It is all so photo and laser can generate stupid amounts of revenue.

    [0]
  33. So true. Best drivers in the world are from LA. I remember going through a five lane traffic circle that was way better than the 2 lane ones here!

    [0]
  34. I’ve driven in LA a few times and at least once a week I comment on how much faster and more traffic there is in LA than here but there’s way less BS. Absolute shit drivers (amazing that such morons can get a license) stupid speed limits and complete ass-backward road designs with crap city planning are all to blame.
